Karina is a dedicated family lawyer and mediator with almost 20 years experience practicing family law. Originally from Powell River, BC, Karina graduated with Honours from the University of Victoria and completed her Law degree in 2002. She was called to the bar in British Columbia in 2003, and in the Northwest Territories in 2005. In Yellowknife, NT, Karina primarily acted as a family lawyer for Legal Aid, before taking the position as the first Children’s Lawyer of the Northwest Territories, in 2011. In 2012, Karina moved with her family to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and was called to the Saskatchewan bar. In Saskatchewan, Karina worked in private practice as a family lawyer, doing some  estate and real estate law. She was trained in Family Mediation in 2015, and has recently updated that training (2023) in British Columbia. Having returned to BC, Karina now practices family law and offers mediation services, in the Comox Valley and Powell River.

Karina focusses solely on Family Law (including adoptions) and Mediation, and has represented clients, including children, at all levels of court, Provincial, Supreme, Appeals and has successfully appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada. Her cases have ranged from pro bono or Legal Aid work to multi-million dollar property settlements, and she has been involved in precedent-setting cases at the appeal level. 

With some 20 years of experience working with family law clients from a wide diversity of backgrounds, Karina prides herself on an ability to communicate with people from all walks of life, with professionalism, kindness and compassion. She is committed to helping clients to resolve conflicts in the best possible manner for them, given their own personal circumstances. While she is an effective advocate in legal proceedings, she is a strong proponent of early dispute resolution processes and is a certified Family Mediator with training in high conflict mediation and intimate partner violence, skills she has put to use in assisting parties in mediations. Karina strives to empower her clients to understand legal and conflict resolution processes and to be active participants in solutions.
